Liam Heffernan’s mother gives heartbreaking eulogy at son’s funeral

A heartbroken mother yesterday spoke of the "absolute privilege’’ she and her husband had of being the parents of two children who died of the extremely rare Battens disease.

Mary Heffernan told the hushed congregation at the funeral Mass for their “superhero, little Liamo’’ — who passed away on Sunday, aged 5 — that life was worth living.

“After watching our two beautiful children struggle to hang on to every second of their short lives, it is our duty to live life to the full in their honour,’’ she said.
