€5m project to help restore rare Kerry pearl mussel

Freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is one of the longest-living invertebrates, and can live for more than 100 years. The species was formerly widespread but pearl fishing as well as pollution has led to its decline.

Ireland is regarded as a stronghold for the species which helps keep rivers clean. It has been given particular conservation value and specific protection under Europe’s Habitats Directive.
