Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin insists his party is receiving a much better hearing on the doorstep, but refused to be drawn on how much “grief” is still being aimed at it over the financial collapse under the last government.

Launching Fianna Fáil’s campaign for the European elections, Mr Martin gave an upbeat assessment of how voters have changed their opinion of his party.

Pushed on the level of “grief” Fianna Fáil is subjected to by voters, and whether he felt “guilt” over his role in the last government, Mr Martin repeated that attitudes appeared to have changed. “People are engaging with us — there’s a different mood in that respect.
