Ireland South MEP Phil Prendergast said she has no regrets about calling for her party leader’s resignation, saying she was just giving “an honest answer to an honest question”.

Prendergast sticks to her guns on Gilmore comments

“People say what they say. I’m outspoken. I’ve always been outspoken and I’m never going to be ashamed of that fact,” she said in Cork yesterday.

“I have no regret but I am moving on now as my concentration has to be totally and utterly on May 23,” she said.

“It was just an honest answer to an honest question from a journalist. I just said there was a lot of negativity around Eamon Gilmore. A lot of our voters are saying it and a lot of our representatives are saying it”.

The MEP’s comments came in the aftermath of a newspaper poll that showed her receiving just 4% of the vote in Ireland South. Later in the week, she met Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore at a meeting she described as “frank”.

After plummeting to 6% in the latest opinion poll, Labour looks set to fail to secure any seats in the European elections.
