French seek further Irish help in du Plantier probe

French authorities have asked for further Irish assistance into their own investigation into the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, Justice Minister Alan Shatter has revealed.

He told TDs the request from Paris was being considered and no decision had yet been taken.

Mr Shatter said Ireland had been providing assistance to the French investigation into the documentary film maker’s death under various international co-operation agreements.

The justice minister said Paris had been kept informed regarding a civil case brought by Ian Bailey into the way gardaí handled the murder probe.

France has also been made aware of the controversy surrounding Mr Bailey’s case in regard to widespread telephone taping at garda stations.

Referring to the French investigation into Ms du Plantier’s death, Mr Shatter said: “French authorities have sought further assistance and this is under consideration at the moment.”

The minister added legal advice was being sought in relation to the request.

“I assure the House that should new evidence come to light in relation to the brutal and tragic killing of Ms du Plantier, it will be pursued fully,” Minister Shatter added.

The justice minister also told TDs that two reports into the GSOC bugging affair would be made public “shortly”.

Following controversy surrounding his non appearance at garda conferences in recent weeks, Mr Shatter said he was unable to attend the AGSI conference due to “personal reasons”.
