Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes has said the issues surrounding the Garda tapes “go way behind data protection” and relate to citizens receiving a fair trial.

Mr Hawkes confirmed he was contacted by letter by former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan on March 19 seeking “urgent advice” on the issue of the discovery order made in relation to Garda recordings.

This was four days before the Taoiseach was informed of the Garda recording system.
