A leading environmental campaigner has given her seal of approval to a plan to make safe a toxic dump in Cork harbour and transform it ito a public park.

Mary O’Leary, chairman of CHASE (Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment), said she believes plans to build embankments around the East Tip site on Haulbowline island and cap it with various materials to prevent leaks “is the best solution”.

Ms O’Leary, who is a member of the steering committee set up to oversee the remediation of the site, said she was satisfied with the plans presented to a Bord Pleanála oral hearing in the Clarion Hotel yesterday.
