An 88-year-old woman who was meticulous about minding herself and only crossed the road at pedestrian crossings was killed while crossing at such a point with the green light in her favour at a busy junction in her home town of Macroom.

Ellen Moynihan is survived by two daughters, a son and grandchildren. Her son, Gerard Moynihan, recalled his mother at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday where the man responsible for careless driving causing her death was given a suspended one-year sentence.

Mr Moynihan said June 6, 2012, was a day that the Moynihan family would never forget. She died from her injuries 10 days later.
