The Alliance for Animal Rights has called for an outright ban on sulky racing after a horse died during a race in Co Tipperary at the weekend.

The incident occurred on a main road near Horse and Jockey. Gardaí were called to the scene and a spokesman said last night they were investigating a number of traffic offences on foot of the racing activity.

“There was a minor collision between a man driving a sulky and a car. A horse was also injured in one of the races and died at the scene,” the garda spokesman said.

Gardaí in Thurles are investigating. The dead horse was removed by county council officials.

Bernie Wright, alliance spokesperson, said sulky racing was becoming a “national problem”.

“This is horrendous. Horses are being driven at speeds that are too fast, they’re wearing blinkers, they are a danger to themselves and to humans,” Ms Wright said. She said sulky drivers were operating with “no licences and no insurance” and were a “public liability”.

“It has to be banned outright, it’s the only way to stop it,” she said.

The picture of the dead horse was posted on the Facebook page Voices Against Neglect & Abuse of all Horses (VANAH).
