Vulnerable elderly and disabled people will have to abandon independent living for institutional care due to sweeping benefit changes, groups have warned.

Opposition parties have accused the Government of a “sneaky” attack on senior citizens, with shake-ups of the housing adaptation grant for people with a disability, housing aid for older people, and the mobility aids grant.

The benefits affected currently go to 10,000 people, but only new recipients will be hit by the changes.
