Building owners in busy cities and towns have been urged to check their properties for storm damage and ensure that they are safe as the country braces for another battering tomorrow.

The warning came after two streets in one of Cork City’s busiest shopping precincts were closed overnight on public safety grounds after violent storm force winds loosened slates and gutters on several buildings on the Coal Quay, Castle St, and Liberty Street.

The fire service responded to reports of flying debris on Thursday night and after an initial inspection of the area, and following consultation with the gardaí, Castle St and Liberty St were closed.
