Passenger dies after car enters lake

The incident happened at Grange Lake on the River Shannon, near Strokestown, just after midnight.

The 37-year-old victim, believed to be named Shane Donnelly, was the passenger in the car, which was carrying two people at the time of the incident.

The other person, the 34- year-old female driver of the car, escaped uninjured.

According to gardaí, she sought help from locals living nearby.

They were able to get the man out of the vehicle, but despite attempts to resuscitate him he was declared dead a short time later.

His body was taken to Roscommon General Hospital where a post mortem is to be arranged.

Boyle gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Meanwhile, a post mortem was carried out yesterday on a 28- year-old man who died in a crash in east Cork on Saturday morning. The victim, who has not been named by gardaí, was the only occupant of a car which hit a bridge at Muckridge in Youghal at 7.15am. There was no other vehicle involved.

He was taken by coastguard helicopter to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí appealed for any witnesses to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 4621550.

In Galway, a 30-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital following another single-vehicle crash, which happened shortly before 2am on Saturday at Coolarne, Turloughmore.

A 23-year-old male passenger also suffered injuries, though they are not life-threatening.

The two deaths bring to 182 the number of people killed on the country’s roads since the start of the year.

With over a week to go to the start of 2014, that is 20 more than died in the whole of 2012, but four less than the 186 total for 2011.
