The rent rates for local authority tenants in Cork City will not be increased in next week’s council budget.

And it is expected that the budget will not be as harsh as some councillors feared, with the possibility that the local government fund will be roughly the same as last year — and may even see a slight increase. There may even be enough funding to undertake some estate roads resurfacing work, and that a €250,000 investment in city centre projects will be announced.

The news emerged yesterday after city manager Tim Lucey briefed party whips on his preparations for the 2014 budget ahead of next Monday’s budget meeting.
