Man charged with murder after body found in chute

Det Garda Noel Maxwell arrested and charged David O’Loughlin, aged 27, with the murder of Liam Manley, aged 59, at Garden City Apartments, North Main St, Cork, on May 12.

A maintenance man who went to clear rubbish which had built up in the chute discovered Mr Manley’s body in the chute at the apartment complex on May 13.

Mr O’Loughlin, with an address at an apartment at Garden City, has been in custody since May on a charge of assault causing harm to Mr Manley.

Insp Pat Meaney said the State was withdrawing the assault charge in light of the more serious charge being brought against Mr O’Loughlin. Judge Leo Malone remanded the accused in custody to appear at Cork District Court again on Nov 21.

Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said in view of the fact that the accused had been in custody for six months in relation to this case that every effort should be made by the State to serve Mr O’Loughlin with the book of evidence as soon as possible.
