Rory McIlroy's game in the rough despite Caroline's support

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have hit rumours of a break-up into the rough after the two appeared together in Dubai.

The Danish tennis player was eye-catching in tight-fitting top and shorts, and in her first appearance at a golf tournament since she donned those very unfashionable Augusta National white overalls last April to caddy for double Major-winning McIlroy at the Masters Par-3 Contest.

However, she wasn’t able to lift her beau’s game on the opening day of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship yesterday.

That said, McIlroy was pleased to see the Dane again out supporting him.

“It’s nice to see Caroline following me,” said McIlroy. “She started her pre-season a couple of days ago and was on court this morning at 7am before coming up here to see me.”

McIlroy and Wozniacki had spent last week in the Maldives and, on arrival in Dubai, they’ve been playing tennis while Wozniacki revealed she also had joined McIlroy for a game of golf earlier this week on the Els Club course. “Unfortunately, my golf is not getting any better,” she smiled.

Yesterday was not McIlroy’s best performance. He had birdied his first two holes, a 7-iron to six feet at the first and a 50-foot two-putt birdie at the second, before birdieing his fourth hole where he put a 5-iron to 18-feet and holed the putt. But the world No 6 failed to capitalise en route to a one under par 71 in the defence of his last tournament victory.

Twelve months ago, Wozniacki reluctantly agreed to join McIlroy for photographs on the presentation green, moments after he captured both the DP World Tour Championship and Race to Dubai No 1 crown.

Wozniacki is also in Dubai with her new coach, Swedish-born Thomas Hogstedt and former coach to Maria Sharapova.

Hogstedt will replace Wozniacki’s father, Piotr, as her primary coach.

Wozniacki indicated she will not travel to Australia in the next fortnight when McIlroy competes in the Emirates Australian Open in Sydney, but will be behind the ropes a week later in suburban LA.

“I am going to southern California with Rory when he plays in Tiger’s event the week after he plays in Sydney,” she said.

“It’s just too far to travel to Australia as I am playing in the Brisbane International and Sydney before the Australian Open so I didn’t want to have to make two journeys to Australia in such a short space of time.”
