Paddy Redmond, 65, was found with a stab wound at an apartment at Mount Kennett Place, Dock Rd, when gardaí were called there at around 2am on Sunday.
He died five hours later at Limerick University Hospital.
Mr Redmond had an apartment on the first floor. He was found with a single stab wound in another apartment two doors away from his apartment.
Mr Redmond, who was originally from Dublin, moved to Limerick some years ago and was unemployed.
He was separated with three adult children.
A number of people residing in the apartment building have been interviewed.
A garda source said a clearer picture of events leading up to the fatal stabbing have begun to emerge following the investigation.
Sources said there have been reports of “domestic- type” rows on the floor on which Mr Redmond resided.
He was in poor health and had recently been in hospital.
His death is the first violent death in Limerick since Jan 2012.
