Man admits raping two girls, aged 6 and 9

A man has admitted raping two young girls at a house in Athlone in a crime which shocked the nation.

The 30-year-old father of two has indicated he will plead guilty when his case comes to trial in the Central Criminal Court.

The accused man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been in custody at Castlerea Prison since first appearing at Longford District Court on Oct 1.

<p> Volunteers attending the DMax 7.7 fitness event, in honour of Darragh McCarthy, who tragically passed away last year at just 21 years of age. The sold-out fitness event saw over 300 competitors take on DMax 7.7 featuring seven fitness stations, lasting seven minutes per station with a two minute transition between station. Competitors entered in teams of two and tested their strength, endurance and mental resilience across a series of challenges including rope skipping, ski-erg, medicine ball, assault bike, rowing, burpee box jumps and wall balls.
