When it comes to spectacular sporting gaffes, the cock-up that led to the misspelling on a medal of the name of our latest FAI Cup champions is in a different league to Sky Sports confusing Swansea with Newport.

While Sky Sports showed a fleeting picture of Newport with the word “Swansea” emblazoned across it, the medals handed out to both winners and losers after last Sunday’s FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium will forever bear testimony to the engraver’s error.

Instead of naming “Sligo Rovers”, the inscription read “Silgo Rovers”, prompting a Twitter storm with one concerned tweeter wondering if “Derry might not qualify for Europe as the Cup final was apparently won by Silgo Rovers”.
