Woman jailed for threatening to kill rape victim

A rape victim who was due to give evidence in a criminal trial was threatened that, if the rapist was convicted, she would be dead within a week.

Garda Alison O’Flynn said the woman was due to testify in a rape trial when she was confronted by Angelique Arundel, formerly of Shannon Lawn, Mayfield, Cork, and recently living in Tipperary.

Arundel, aged 27, approached the middle-aged woman in Cork city centre in the middle of the day. Arundel called the woman “a fucking prostitute, a fucking alcoholic, and a whore”.

The terrified woman went into McDonald’s at Daunt Square to get some protection from the tirade of abuse, but Arundel followed her in to the fast-food outlet where the verbal abuse continued for another two minutes.

“She was shouting at the top of her voice and the incident was caught on CCTV. She was arrested two or three days later and admitted she threatened to kill [the rape victim],” said Garda O’Flynn.

The actual words used were to the effect that, if the man went down for the crime, she (the complainant) would be dead in a week.

Garda O’Flynn said that during the trial the woman was worried about what Arundel would do to her afterwards. She expressed this fear in her victim impact statement after the man was convicted of rape and other related offences.

Arundel pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to a charge of menacing, intimidating, or putting in fear a witness to court proceedings on May 23, 2011.

The rapist has since been convicted and sentenced.

Arundel previously told her barrister, Niamh Stewart, that she was “very sorry about what happened that day. I am very sorry. I had a lot of drink taken. I was out all night. I bumped into her that morning. I was intoxicated with drink and drugs. I was not in my right senses.”

She said she was addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs.

While Arundel had nothing to do with the rape case she was familiar with details of it.

Judge David Riordan sentenced her yesterday to two years in prison with the last 14 months suspended on condition that she would stay away from the victim for at least three years and comply with the directions of the probation service for eight months after her release from prison.
