A man drinking and watching horse racing on television in a house with two others ended up being stabbed in the left eye with a broken pint glass or bottle until he passed out.

Yesterday, Alan Healy, 47, of Spring Lane, Blackpool, Cork, was sentenced to nine years in jail at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on a charge of assault causing serious harm to Martin Doyle.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin described the attack as “gruesome”.
