A young man snatched a handbag from an elderly woman waiting for a lift home from a bingo night in Cork city.

But two men in the area chased after the culprit and helped gardaí to catch him.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin jailed the accused for 18 months and said that his level of determination to commit crime was clear from the fact that he stuffed three €50 notes into his mouth before trying to discard other items from the bag into the river.

Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard that Ricard Salatkas, aged 22, with an address at Waterfront apartments, Lynch’s Quay, Cobh, Co Cork, was caught after a 15-minute chase through the streets of Cork on May 22.

Around this time the same defendant was caught after carrying out an attempted robbery at the Goldrush casino in Cork city.

He was later identified on CCTV.

Judge Ó Donnabháin imposed two concurrent 18-month sentences on Salatkas for the theft from the woman and the attempted robbery at the casino.
