Welfare sanctions eased in budget

Sanctions and penalties for elderly unemployed people unwilling to take up work opportunities will be eased under budget changes to be discussed today alongside the Social Welfare Bill.

Plans for a home renovation grant to boost the construction sector and encourage homeowners to spend will also be brought forward under budget measures released today.

The two changes form part of the Coalition’s budget plans which aim to save €2.5bn next year through cutbacks and tax measures.
