Fáilte Ireland sanctions €2.5m for Spike Island tourism project
Cork County Council, which intends to pump significant sums into the project, wants to create an interpretive centre in the Fort Mitchell complex, focusing on the island’s history, including its early monastic settlement, its role as a centre for transporting convicts to Australia, and as a military garrison and prison.
Minister for the Marine Simon Coveney welcomed news of the funding.
