West Cork-based Sean Murray, whose Skibbereen shop houses the region’s largest lingerie department, has cut holes in the back of dozens of pink t-shirts to help spare the blushes of anxious participants worried about baring their boobs in his shop next week.
And Sean vowed to not just break the current record — but smash it.
“I’m going for 80 bras,” he declared.
Using just one hand, Sean will have to unclasp more than 69 bras in 60 seconds if he is to break Dutch-man Dennis Storm’s 2012 record.
While 40 volunteers — both male and female — have signed up for the attempt in his shop on Saturday, Oct 26, Sean said it’s full steam ahead.
And as the clock ticks down to the whacky event, a man more familiar than most with the breast stroke is poised to dive in.
Endurance swimming legend Steve Redmond is expected to strap on a bra for the record-breaking attempt.
Sean is practising up to half an hour a day on mannequins to ensure he will be ultra sharp on the day.
“The guidelines are quite strict so we must adhere to certain criteria,” he said.
All funds raised will go towards the Irish Cancer Society’s Get the Girls breast cancer campaign.
Mr Murray and his staff also plan to try and fit more than 500 women for bras in eight hours, and fit another 500 men and women for jeans in eight hours to enter the record books on the treble.
Customers will be offered a €2.50 discount on the sale of each bra sold from his shop this month, which he will match with a €2.50 donation to the Irish Cancer Society.
He will give €5 to the charity for every pair of jeans sold this month.
