Application to clean up toxic site in weeks

A planning application to transform the State’s largest toxic waste dump into vast public parkland as part of a €40m clean-up is due to be lodged within weeks.

The development follows the resolution of complex legal issues regarding the ownership of tracts of land in and around the contaminated ex-Irish Steel/Irish Ispat plant at Haulbowline in Cork Harbour.

It is considered to be one of the State’s worst environmental disaster zones.
