People with cancer, disabilities, or serious illnesses who have had their medical cards removed in “one foul swoop” deserve an explanation for the reasons why, according to Fine Gael TD, Paul Connaughton.

Despite the Taoiseach claiming there has been no change in policy surrounding the rewarding of discretionary medical cards, TDs from across party lines gave examples in the Dáil last night of “inhumane” cases where they have been withdrawn. The Galway East TD said that politicians have met people on a weekly or daily basis who have had “their lives thrown into turmoil when they received letters saying their cards were cancelled without a reason”.

“The HSE communications office are well able to give out good news, it’s only right that the removal of medical cards is explained as well,” he said.
