Ex-property developer refused free legal aid

Declan Ryan, aged 31, of Killaha West, Kenmare, was before Kenmare District Court yesterday in connection with an allegation of hit-and-run in a traffic collision on May 5 at Killaha.

A number of summonses to do with producing proper information to the driver of the other car in the collision, proper insurance and licensing, have been issued.

The case was before the court for mention yesterday.

Applying for legal aid for his client, solicitor Padraig O’Connell said Ryan was in debt to the tune of €9m and was going to London.

Ryan, once a director of Benners Hotel in Tralee, now had no money to offset his legal costs, Mr O’Connell said.

However, Judge James O’Connor refused to grant the certificate yesterday and adjourned the matter for mention to December.

Mr O’Connell said he would continue to represent Ryan.
