Close shave as 9 brothers to make cut for charity

Nine bearded brothers are travelling home to Co Meath this weekend for a razor-sharp Guinness World Record.

Close shave as 9 brothers to make cut for charity

The Morris brothers, who range in age from 47 to 70, are aiming to make the record for the most siblings to take part in a charity beard shave in their home village of Carnaross, outside Kells.

It will also be the first time since their mum Nell died two years ago that all the brothers will meet.

Organiser Joe Morris explains: “Myself and my brothers Fin and Hughie live in Carnaross; Tom lives in Carlanstown, Kells; Ownie lives in Kells; and Jimmy lives in Blanchardstown.

“My other brothers Bill and Tom have just landed from Canada and Pat is due to appear from London this afternoon.”

All proceeds on the night are to go to the Niall Mellon Township Trust in which Joe is a volunteer.

A window and door glazier by trade, he said: “I hope to go to Kenya with 350 others this year to help build schools with the trust. This will be my sixth time travelling with the trust and it’s an amazing experience. I hope to raise €4,000 for the charity from this event.

“Apparently, there is a similar world record for a number of people getting their beards shaved at once, but there is no record yet set for brothers to get shaved.”

Laughing he added: “When I said it to my brother Jimmy, he told me: ‘You expect me to grow a beard when I can’t even grow hair on my head’.”

The Morris brothers also have two sisters and the charity shave will also prove useful for a family get-together on Saturday.

“It’s the first time since our mam Nell died two years ago that we’ll all be together and the brothers will all be clean-shaven for the wedding of our niece Ciara McArdle to Richie McCarthy in Carnaross on Saturday.”

The brothers will be shaved by Kells barber Gary Dee in the Carnaross Inn, Carnaross, Kells, tomorrow night at 9pm.
