If festival attendances are any indication of the health of the economy, then this year’s Electric Picnic turnout would seem to suggest a turnabout in the nation’s fortunes.

A slight reduction in ticket prices ensured that the event was a sell-out, with 35,000 packing the campsites at the Stradbally estate.

As usual, most were dressed in anticipation of the downpours and mudbaths of previous years. The brightly coloured wellies and raincoats proved unnecessary, however, as did the 40 red umbrellas that one artist had hung from the trees. Apart from a few brief showers, the weekend was blessed with sunshine.
