Retailer to use world-first database for pigs

SuperValu is set to have access to the world’s first national DNA database for pigs.

The DNA TraceBack system, developed by IdentiGEN, will allow the retailer to ensure all its bacon is 100% Irish.

As a result of the weaknesses found in the paper-based traceability system following the pigmeat dioxin crisis, the Irish Farmers Association partnered with IdentiGEN to create the world’s first national DNA database for pigs.
