Court approves fresh bail terms for McGeever

The High Court has approved fresh bail terms for Kevin McGeever, aged 68, the former millionaire developer charged with wasting Garda time.

Mr McGeever was remanded in custody at Harristown District Court late last month after he failed to come up with money for bail. It had been set at his own bond of €2,500 and independent surety of €10,000, with a minimum of €3,000 of that to be cash.

His lawyers sought to have the terms amended because he was not in a position to come up with the cash.

However, District Court Judge Geoffrey Browne said Mr McGeever had to go to the High Court if he wanted the terms altered.

The application was due to be heard earlier this week, but was adjourned to yesterday’s sitting when lawyers for Mr McKeever and the DPP told Mr Justice Paul McDermott new bail terms had been agreed.

The terms include that he reside at Brooklawn, Clontarf, Dublin 3, sign on three times a week with the gardaí, surrender his travel documents, and on his own bond of €10,000.

Mr McGeever was not present when the matter was heard. He was remanded in custody with consent to bail to a sitting at Harristown District Court today.

Mr McGeever of Nirvana, Ballywinna, Craughwell, Co Galway, was charged following a Garda investigation launched in January after he was found on a roadside in Co Leitrim by a passerby.

He had been reported missing in May 2012. Gardaí investigated an allegation of false imprisonment. He was subsequently arrested, questioned, and charged.
