Chada charged with murdering sons

A 43-year-old man appeared in court last night charged with the murder of his two schoolboy sons.

Chada charged with murdering sons

Sanjeev Chada of Ballinkill, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, stood with his head bowed and hands clasped during the five minute hearing.

He appeared distraught and emotional throughout the proceedings.

The bearded accused was dressed in a blue top, grey flannel bottoms, and blue sneakers and wore a ponytail.

Just after 9pm Chada was ushered by detectives into Swinford Courthouse.

An eerie silence pervaded the courtroom for almost 10 minutes before the proceedings got under way.

Det Sgt Gary Walshe gave evidence of arresting the accused at 7.50pm yesterday in Westport Garda Station.

Witness said that in response to the first charge the accused made no reply.

But in response to the second charge he replied: “I am so sorry. I really wish I hadn’t done it.”

Supt Aidan Foley applied for a remand in custody to Harristown (Castlerea) Court today at 11am.

James Hanley, solicitor, applied for free legal aid for the accused stating that effectively he had no income whatsoever.

Mr Hanley said Chada was living with his wife who was in gainful employment.

Mr Hanley asked that the accused be checked on regularly while in prison and that he be kept apart from other prisoners.

When asked if he was suggesting suicide watch, Mr Hanley replied in the affirmative.

Judge Devins replied that would be straying into the territory of the prison governor but the request was noted.

A crowd of about 50 people gathered outside Swinford Courthouse but there was no shouting or any incidents.
