Girl, 17, killed after car collides with Dublin bus

A 17-year-old girl has died after the car in which she was travelling collided with a bus in Dublin yesterday.

The incident happened on the Greenhills Rd in Walkinstown at around 5pm.

The victim, who was the front-seat passenger in the car, was fatally injured when the car collided with a Dublin Bus vehicle operating the route from Clare Hall to Jobstown. It was carrying seven passengers at the time. She was brought to Tallaght Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The 19-year-old male driver was also taken to Tallaght Hospital. His condition was described as serious.

The bus driver and one bus passenger were taken to St James’s Hospital with minor injuries. The driver was released a short time later.

Gardaí closed off the road and put diversions in place to facilitate an examination of the crash scene by garda forensic collision investigators. It is believed weather conditions in the area may have been poor at the time of the accident.

Investigating officers appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact Crumlin Garda Station on 01 6666 200, the Garda confidential telephone line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus said it will carry out its own investigation and would review CCTV footage from the time of the accident. She said the company would fully co-operate with the Garda investigation and make the CCTV footage available to officers.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, a motorcyclist in his 20s died after his bike collided with a car in Wexford.

The incident happened at 8.25pm at Ferrycarrig on the Wexford to Enniscorthy Rd. The victim was taken to Wexford General Gospital for a postmortem examination.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

The two deaths bring to 109 the number of people killed in vehicle incidents this year. In July alone, 16 people lost their lives.
