Corporate bowling booking turns out to be for The Boss

Bruce Springsteen limbered up for this weekend’s two-night stint in Kilkenny by playing bowling with his band and crew at the city’s main bowling alley.

Corporate bowling booking turns out to be for The Boss

Yesterday the owner of the K-Bowl in the centre of Kilkenny, Shane Murphy, admitted he was stunned when a corporate booking made some weeks ago turned out to be for ‘The Boss’ and his touring party.

Youtube footage emerged yesterday showing Springsteen leaning out of the rear passenger door of a car as he was leaving the K-Bowl on Thursday night, having his photograph taken with punters and signing autographs.

It served as a perfect preamble to tonight’s concert in Nowlan Park and the second concert on Sunday night.

Shane, who has run the K-Bowl for the past five years, said the bowling alley had been booked out for the night some weeks ago, but that he had no inkling that Springsteen was involved.

On Thursday, the woman who had made the booking called to check some of the details but didn’t reveal who was coming in that night. It was only when security staff and “pretty cool-looking American guys” started showing up that the penny started to drop.

Shane said: “I spoke to the lady who made the booking and she said ‘I suppose you can see who’s coming in.’

“She said she hoped he was coming, as long as there wasn’t too much of a fuss.

“It was a private function for the band, his entourage and his family. Lo and behold, he then walked in himself.”

As many as 150 people were in the K-Bowl and Shane said the guests enjoyed themselves by bowling, playing arcade games and eating and drinking.

“He must have been there two-and-a-half, three hours, Shane said. “We were absolutely delighted.”

“They were just kicking back and relaxing,” he said, adding that when he spoke to Bruce they just had “a general chit-chat,” during which the New Jersey icon said the tour had been “fantastic”.
