Christian, pro-life groups sent appeals to Creighton

Ms Creighton has been warned the issue of introducing legislation for terminations in limited circumstances will be challenged in the courts and should be put to the people in a referendum.

The material sent to her, obtained by the Irish Examiner, includes a short film comparing abortions to the Holocaust, while other letters urge her to “oppose this terrible evil”.

A supporter of Israeli rights sent the Dublin South East TD a brochure claiming the any abortion legislation would result in “the killing of unborn children for social and economic convenience”.

The writer added: “Please oppose this terrible evil and do what you can to ensure the protection of all children in this country from the time of their conception.”

The Wexford Christian Community Church sent Ms Creighton a 30-minute DVD made in the US, 180, which also compared abortion to the Holocaust, the industrial-scale genocide in which 6m Jews were murdered during the Second World War.

The group apologised to Ms Creighton for its content but said they hoped it would inform her future decisions. Commenting on the possible introduction of abortion legislation, the religious group added: “This is surely a heavy responsibility that will be recorded in Irish history. We strongly believe that the abortion of innocent babies is not only a cruel procedure, but that ultimately it is legalising the murder of these innocent children who have a right to life.”

Ms Creighton, in a previous interview with the Irish Examiner, revealed she had received “vicious, personal, horrific emails and letters from both sides” from both sides. None of these emails were released with the letters obtained through the freedom of information request.

Ms Creighton said in recent weeks that she would not support legislation which allowed for abortion for suicidal woman, a measure the Government insists must be introduced to comply with the X case.

Pro-life group Family & Life lobbied the TD to resist pressure to legislate for abortion following the death of Indian woman Savita Halappanavar in Galway.

The letters to Ms Creighton were part of hundreds sent to the Department of Taoiseach to her and Enda Kenny from both pro-life and pro-choice campaigners.
