Hostel sealed off after man’s ‘suspicious death’

The victim, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, was stabbed in the neck with what garda sources described “as a sharp implement” last Friday.

It’s understood that the man, originally from North Cork, may have been involved in a row with another man which took place near the homeless shelter around 4.30pm last Friday.

Gardaí know a number of people witnessed an altercation between two men, of similar age, which they believe may have taken place in the areas of Anderson’s Quay and Anderson’s St.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene and gardaí found the victim “bleeding profusely from a neck wound.”

He and another man were rushed to hospital by ambulance a few minutes later.

The man was discharged shortly afterwards, but garda sources said that he was later reported as unwell.

He was taken to Mercy University Hospital where he was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon.

Following his death, gardaí sealed off an area of the hostel, where he had lived for some time, for forensic analysis.

* Gardaí are looking to speak to anybody who may have witnessed a fight between two men in that area between 4pm-5pm last Friday. Anybody with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station at 021 4522000.
