Education Minister Ruairi Quinn’s decision to re-examine de facto cuts to resource teachers for children with Down’s syndrome has received a cautious welcome from families affected by the condition.

Speaking after a “robust” meeting with the minister yesterday, Down Syndrome Ireland chief executive Pat Clarke said the move was necessary to ensure children with the condition do not suffer needlessly.

However, while welcoming the announcement, he said it was vital the minister stayed true to his word on the issue.
