The terms for allowing abortion on the grounds of suicidal intent are “very restrictive”, according to Fianna Fáil health spokesman Billy Kelleher.

While some of his party refused to support proposed abortion legislation because they find the suicide grounds too liberal, Mr Kelleher said it would be “highly unusual” that terminations would be granted on such grounds.

“In such circumstances, the woman will be required to go before a panel to be assessed by an obstetrician and two psychiatrists and, in the event that the panel refuses her request for a termination, a review panel may consider the matter.
