A double murder investigation involving more than 50 gardaí got under way in Killorglin, Co Kerry, after autopsies confirmed a Lithuanian woman and her young daughter had died violently.

Appeal for public help in double murder probe

Gardaí renewed their appeal to the public to assist the full-scale probe into the brutal deaths of Jolanta Lubiene, 27, and her 8-year-old daughter, Enrika, whose bodies were found at their home in a Killorglin housing estate on Sunday night.

Both had severe stab wounds and a search for a murder weapon is continuing in the vicinity of the house they had been renting in Langford Downs, about 500m from the centre of Killorglin.

Gardaí also confirmed the last sighting of Jolanta was at 1.50pm on Saturday at Langford St, Killorglin, as she walked home after shopping in the town.

Supt Flor Murphy, Killarney, who is heading up the investigation, appealed to anybody who was on Langford St, and especially, in Langford Downs, on Saturday afternoon to come forward.

“This was a horrific crime and we want the public to help us. People may have seen something unusual, or suspicious,’’ he said.

Jolanta was dressed in a dark jacket and trousers and was wearing white runners when last seen.

The last sighting of Enrika has not been fully established, but she was definitely seen in the estate on Friday afternoon.

When asked if there was any danger to the public, with a killer at large, Supt Murphy urged people to help the gardaí and to remain calm.

Interpol, the Lithuanian embassy, and Lithuanian police have already been contacted as part of the investigation.

Asked if there were any leads, so far, Supt Murphy said “all aspects of inquiry are being explored’’.
