Government ministers have expressed support for proposals to abolish the Seanad amid mounting opposition to the referendum to close the Upper House.

However, European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton said there “is an obvious role for the Seanad” in the scrutiny of EU legislation.

Her views put her at odds with Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who has said the Seanad has ceased to be relevant.
