A major expo, conference, and workshops are planned as part of a drive to help businesses on Cork’s northside overcome the recession.

Details of the initiative were outlined at a meeting last night, at which those involved said the highlight of the programme would be a conference and showcase at the Neptune Stadium on Sept 27-28.

Workshops will concentrate on themes including “managing in times of uncertainty” and “social media and branding”.

The expo will feature 60-plus exhibitors “showcasing the richness, quality, diversity, and choice of the businesses trading throughout the northside”.

The initiative, titled ‘The Northside for Business’ programme, was launched at Heineken Ireland’s Cork headquarters by Lord Mayor, Cllr John Buttimer.

“This is a key part of the economic regeneration of the northside of the city. The development board for the project is compris-ed of Cork City Council, Cork City Enterprise Board, local business representatives, the Plato Business Network, and other stakeholders. It is an important public-private partnership to promote commerce in the area,” Mr Buttimer said.

It marks the culmination of work undertaken by a committee under the chairmanship of Jim O’Donovan of Cork City Council to address the economic challenges facing the northside.

The group identified new development opportunities and gave rise to a new tagline, “growing more than apples”. This acknowledges Cork’s northside as home to the European headquarters of one of the world’s leading brands.

The first phase of the project will commence this month as retail consultants James Burke & Associates start work with a number of local business owners aimed at improving their turnover.

Mr O Donovan, who is chairman of the Economic Development Board, said he is confident the initiative “will bolster existing business”.

Cork City Enterprise Board chief executive Adrienne Rodgers said businesses “need the correct strategy to survive and this programme will continue to work with local business people to ensure this is achieved”.

Michael Finn, who runs Northside Glass, said the rich cultural diversity of the area was of huge economic importance to the city “and the need for us all to work together has never been so important”.

He is encouraging all local businesses to register online for the expo.
