Rugby club to bungee for Donal’s fund

A Limerick rugby club aims to continue with young cancer victim Donal Walsh’s plans for fundraising for a children’s hospital.

Rugby club to bungee for Donal’s fund

Galbally Rugby Club is organising a fundraising bungee jump in memory of the 16-year-old boy who passed away last week.

The Blennerville, Co Kerry, schoolboy, diagnosed with cancer four years ago, had managed to raise €50,000 for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.

Donal’s uncle Andrew Walsh is a member of the club.

Club chairman Jim Stapleton said: “With the prior agreement with Donal and his family, this event had been themed Jump For Donal. “Sadly, as Donal has now passed away, since our initial plans were devised, it remains the desire of his uncle Andrew and his family to continue with the fundraising in Donal’s name as had been agreed initially.

“We are delighted to confirm that the plans for this fundraising bungee jump will proceed on Saturday, Jun 22, at the grounds of Galbally Rugby Club.”

Details have also been agreed with Crumlin Hospital and Jump for Donal is a fully registered fundraising event with the hospital.

He added: “Donal had campaigned with determination to prevent suicide from impacting families throughout Ireland and he had also fundraised to improve the conditions for patients and their families within Crumlin Children’s Hospital where he had been treated for his cancer.”

Up to 40 jumpers have already been confirmed but the club hopes to have the maximum permitted, 120, participating.

“By doing so, Andrew and the Walsh family will be able to increase significantly the amount raised for Crumlin Children’s Hospital in the name of Donal,” said Mr Stapleton.

“Sponsorship cards will contain 30 lines of €10 per line. Only jumpers who return fully completed sponsorship cards prior to or on the day of the event, will be eligible to jump.”
