Garda Donohoe’s family honoured
Mr Shatter made the comments as Det Garda Donohoe’s family received a special medal in his honour.
Mr Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan attended Dublin Castle as Det Garda Donohoe’s wife Caroline and two children were presented with the remembrance medal.
Det Garda Donohoe, 41, was shot dead during a robbery at a credit union in Co Louth on Jan 25.
The award was given during the annual garda memorial service for 87 officers who lost their lives in the service of the State.
Commissioner Callinan described the murder of Det Garda Donohoe as a terrible event, while Mr Shatter said it was an unspeakable crime which had changed the lives of his family.
He said it was tragic that the detective’s name was added to a roll of honour that continues to get longer.
“The brutal murder of Adrian Donohoe was an unspeakable crime and life-changing for his family,” said Mr Shatter.
“The addition of Adrian’s name to this roll of honour brings to 87 the number of members who have been killed in the line of duty. It is 87 too many.”
Mr Shatter expressed his condolences to the family.
