Bernie is just four days old but already mum Kelly is a “dab hand”, according to her family.

“He’s a dote. We are mad about him. The labour was hard but it was worth every minute,” said the Fermoy-based Traveller who won the heart of the nation as she sang her way through six stages of the show despite being heavily pregnant.

Kelly came second behind Keith Hanley from Charleville.

Her labour lasted 15 hours but the 18-year-old managed without any artificial pain relief. And Bernie McDonagh Sr, who she married last year, was there for much of the birth.

Michael Bernard was born at 11.45pm on Friday at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

“Everyone is thrilled. It’s been a great few weeks. God has been good. Everything worked out but now I’m just going to concentrate on taking care of my baby,” said Kelly.
