Farmer uses tractor and chain to rescue driver from Shannon Estuary

A quick-thinking farmer used a tractor and chain to pull a man and his 4x4 from the Shannon Estuary in Co Clare on Monday night.

The incident happened at about 8.45pm when gardaí received a report that a car had driven off the road and into the water at Shannahea between Kildysart and Labasheeda on the north shore of the Shannon Estuary.

Gardaí from Kilrush went to the scene while the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre at Valentia Island was also alerted.
