Cash-strapped pet lovers are to come under even more pressure with the announcement that all dogs will have to be microchipped.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney revealed the plans in the Dáil yesterday, saying the move would help protect the welfare of dogs.

However, it will mean that households already facing higher taxes will have to pay for the animal identification process.
