Ireland continues to operate one of the most restrictive asylum regimes in Europe with just 10% of applicants last year being granted permission to stay.

New figures on asylum applicants registered in the EU in 2012 show that 90% of asylum seekers had their application to remain in Ireland turned down compared to the EU average of 73%.

Of the 27 EU member states only Greece, Luxembourg, and Cyprus had higher refusal rates than Ireland.
