SuperValu’s “eat Irish only menu” has been produced for its Great Irish Event being celebrated in 195 outlets.
The retailer has worked with in-store butchers, bakers, fresh food experts, and Irish suppliers to create a menu that uses quality Irish produce.
SuperValu, part of the Musgrave Group, claims it is one of the few retailers that could create such a diverse menu because of the range of Irish products available in store.
“As a locally-based family retailer, 75% of everything SuperValu sell is sourced or produced in Ireland. The seven-day ‘eat Irish only menu’ reflects this point,” it said yesterday.
SuperValu employs more than 15,000 people.
The retailer said: “SuperValu’s local ownership allows them to buy from local suppliers and producers, and all this commitment serves to reiterate the internationally recognised fact that when you spend €1 locally, three times more stays in the local community.”
The menu, available on SuperValu’s website, offers plenty of choice, even for breakfast, with the option of porridge for as little as €1.27 a day for a family of four, or pancakes for 98c.
For lunch, there is potato salad with smoked bacon and leek vinaigrette for €2.73, or cheese and onion quiche with coleslaw for €3.67. For dinner, there is roast chicken with buttered leeks, mushrooms, and roast potatoes, or ham fillet with swede and mashed potato, all for under €10.
Ray Kelly, SuperValu marketing director, said the company took great pride in supporting Irish food and jobs. “We are firmly committed to Irish communities and so are encouraging people all over Ireland to eat only Irish and local foods as part of our Great Irish Event — not only is this a fun challenge to undertake, but you’ll see just how beneficial it is to your wallet,” he said.
