Finance Minister Michael Noonan has left open the possibility of softer budgets over the next two years as a result of the deal on promissory note payments.

He told the Dáil the public “will see the benefit” in the budgets of the €1bn removed from the deficit as a result of the deal.

However, he said it was too early to say whether the savings would have any impact on the €3.1bn adjustment planned in the next budget, which he indicated will be held in October instead of December.
