Thief struck as victim tried to lodge cash in post office
The middle-aged victim had just got out of his car in Ballintemple, a Cork City suburb, and was walking towards Ballintemple Post Office when he was approached by the robber, who struck him over the head, grabbed the cash, and fled the scene.
The attack happened shortly after 10am on Monday, as the victim got out of his car at Ardfoyle Crescent, Ballintemple.
Gardaí described the thief as approximately 5ft 10in, with short fair hair.
“He was wearing a dark top with some white writing across the front of it and had grey tracksuit bottoms,” said a Garda spokesman. “The victim was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he was treated for a minor head injury.”
Gardaí are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and also examining CCTV footage.
“We also want to speak to anybody who was in the area at the time and who may have seen this man hanging around before the robbery took place, or who might have seen in what direction he left afterwards,” said the spokesman.

In a separate incident, gardaí are looking for an arsonist who caused considerable damage to a house in the Wilton area of Cork City.
Gardaí believe the arsonist was a male in his late teens. He was seen running from the house shortly after the fire was lit just after 6.30pm on Monday.
“It appears some sort of accelerant was used to start the fire in the downstairs sitting room,” said a Garda spokesman. “There was considerable smoke damage to the property, which was unoccupied at the time.”
The house at White Oaks, off Sarsfield Rd, was sealed off for forensic examination. The culprit was seen running away in the direction of Sarsfield Rd.
