Gardaí are searching for a thief who struck a man over the head with a truncheon or baton and stole a large sum of cash about to be lodged in a post office.

The middle-aged victim had just got out of his car in Ballintemple, a Cork City suburb, and was walking towards Ballintemple Post Office when he was approached by the robber, who struck him over the head, grabbed the cash, and fled the scene.

The attack happened shortly after 10am on Monday, as the victim got out of his car at Ardfoyle Crescent, Ballintemple.
